Zara co-founder Rosalia Mera died at the age of 69 after suffering a stroke while on holiday in Menorca. According to Forbes she was Spain's wealthiest woman and the 66th richest woman in the world.

Mera ranked first among women who had earned their wealth rather than acquiring it through inheritance or marriage. She left school when she was 11 and eventually started designing lingerie in her living room with husband Amancio Ortega with whom she would later start Zara. They divorced in the early 1990's.

Ortega went on to become the third richest person in the world with a net worth of about $50 billion. Mera left Zara's parent company in 2004 to concentrate on philanthropy and other business ventures. Today Zara operates 1,763 stores in 86 countries.
