Air Jordan V “Doernbecher” Pays Tribute to Isaac Arzate | Release Date

Nike and Jordan Brand continue their efforts with the OHSU Doernbecher Freestyle Program this time honoring the life of one their former patients, Isaac Arzate, a talented 12-year-old athlete who passed suddenly in April 2012.  Having been admitted initially to OHSU Doerbecher Children’s Hospital in January of 2012 after suffering a heart attack, Isaac recovered from open heart surgery and was invited to be part of the 2012 Freestyle Program.  He initially started sketching and designing his V while recovering, but unfortunately passed suddenly in April of that year from a second heart attack.
In honor of Isaac’s life, Nike and OHSU invited Isaac’s family to complete what their son had started. Using his initial design sketches, the family came together to complete the design and today we take a look at this very special Air Jordan V .
The shoe features a high gloss upper with glow in the dark areas with contrast white laces. Amongst the details on this shoe are Isaac’s jersey numbers, 9 for baseball which appears on upper left side of the shoe and 31 appears on the upper right which is the number he wore for basketball. The inside of the tongue features his initials I.W.A. along the dates of his birth and his passing. The most poignant feature of the shoe is a poem printed in black light ink all over the upper which was written by Isaac on the day before his death which incorporates the words: “My team. My family. We are brothers forever. No matter what.”
The shoe is slated to release Saturday, September 14th on Nike.com and at retail outlets with all proceeds going to the OHSU Doernbecher Program. More images of these special Vs can be seen below.
