Nike Tattoo Leggings Pulled from stores.
New York
Nike
found itself caught up in a racial controversy for using Polynesian
aboriginal tattoo designs on leggings. They have since been pulled from
stores and its website. The Pro Tattoo Tech Tights offended Australia and New Zealand indigenous groups for their resemblance to traditional pe'a markings worn by Samoa men.
It resulted a change.org petition that called for the leggings to be removed... "These designs and the use of them are in direct violation of the Indigenous peoples of the pacific, and is furthermore in violation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples." Nike responding by saying... "The Nike Tattoo Tech collection was inspired by tattoo graphics. We apologize to anyone who views this design as insensitive to any specific culture. No offence was intended."
