Stussy x Yo! MTV Raps – 25th Anniversary Collection | Available Now
For the budding rock n’ roll culture of the 1950s, there was the Dick Clark and American Bandstand. When an influx of new R&B and soul acts came about during the 1970s, Don Cornelius anticipated it with Soul Train. Then there was Yo! MTV Raps, one of first television show devoted fully to rap and hip-hop. Created by the late Ted Demme and Peter Dougherty, with hosting duties by Doctor Dre, Ed Lover, and Fab 5 Freddy, the show didn’t just entertain but “school” most of the world on hip-hop culture. In its seven-year run during the golden era of hip-hop, which started on August 6th, 1988 to August 17th, 1995, the show helped to secure many hip-hop upstarts a place in music history. Some of which are on the new Stussy x Yo! MTV Raps collaboration for 2013 seen here.
In celebrating the show’s 25th anniversary, Stussy turned to Yo! MTV Raps‘ archive and located original graphics of artists Ice T, De La Soul, Gang Starr, Slick Rick, Digital Underground, Queen Latifah, Brand Nubian, Eric B. & Rakim and MC Lyte. Each was then screen-printed on classic 100% soft cotton crewneck tee in either black or white. The original Yo! MTV Raps tag, along with some Stussy signature styling, were added to complete design. Ten designs in all, available now through Stussy Chapter Stores, www.stussy.com online stores for both US and Europe.
